Bottled Water Phase-out - Mill Valley

Purpose: Reduce the City’s environmental impact and set an example for the community.

In June 2008, Mill Valley’s City Manager issued a Directive mandating the immediate phase out of the use of City funds for bottled water. In addition, all water dispensers were required to be bottle-less dispensers that use local utility water.

Public Outreach & Education:

All City staff were provided with their own stainless steel water bottle. In addition, a one page flyer was compiled and distributed to all City staff highlighting the City’s new prohibition on the use of City funds for bottled water, and highlighting alternatives. This flyer is also on display at the Community Center and the Library to educate residents that use or rent these facilities to bring their own reusable water bottles.

The City Clerk estimates that the City will save up to $5000 by switching to bottle-less dispensers and by canceling contracts for bottled water.
