Local Food Action Initiative - Seattle, WA

Purpose: To improve the local food system and in doing so, advance the city’s goals of race and social justice, environmental sustainability, economic development, public health, and emergency preparedness.

A resolution establishing goals, creating a policy framework, and identifying planning analysis and actions to strengthen Seattle’s food system sustainability and security.

How and where food is grown, manufactured, transported, packaged, and distributed significantly impacts the health of individuals, the environment, and our ability to withstand emergencies. The Federal and State Government’s role in food is to regulate and license agricultural production and manufacturing processes. Local governments also impact food issues. Decisions, however, are being made separately without recognizing the connections between the decisions and the policy framework that describes the city’s goals and values.

In partnership with City Council, the Mayor’s Office, and community groups, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and other departments have been stewarding food-related efforts for years. A Food Systems working group coordinates these efforts and provides a venue for sharing new ideas and implementation strategies.

No financial implications.
