Sustainable Fleet - Sacramento
The City of Sacramento’s Sustainable Fleet Program seeks to accelerate alternative fuel and/or powered vehicle replacements to reduce emissions and fossil fuel consumption; and enhance Fleet Management systems and implement new technology with emphasis on reducing fossil fuel consumption and “right sizing” the City fleet.

Goals: The Fleet Sustainability Policy creating the Sustainable Fleet Program was adopted by the City of Sacramento City Council on October 23, 2007. The policy is comprised of the following primary goals:
* Emissions Reduction
* Low Emission Vehicle Acquisitions
* Reduce Petroleum-based Fuel Consumption
* Efficient Vehicle Operations
* Cost Effectiveness and Performance
* Monitoring and Reporting
On January 27, 2009, the program goals were amended to specifically include an annual commitment of 30 percent for alternative fuel and/or alternatively powered vehicle replacements to accelerate the reduction of emissions and fossil fuel consumption.
Results: Since 2005, there has been an annual net decrease overall in petroleum-based fossil fuel consumption and associated emissions by the city’s fleet. This was largely due to achievements driven by the city’s Sustainable Fleet Program and associated policy.
As part of the City’s Sustainable Fleet Program, the City continues to improve vehicle efficiency as part of the City’s ongoing replacement program. Since 2005, the City has replaced a significant portion of its fleet with vehicles that can utilize low carbon fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), propane, and E-85 (85 percent ethanol, 15% unleaded gasoline). The City has also installed alternative fueling infrastructure (fuel pumps, etc.) at key City facilities.
On July 14, 2009 the Mayor and Council awarded a five-year contract for the purchase of fleet telemetrics equipment. The application of fleet telemetrics and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology to the City’s fleet has the greatest potential to further reduce fleet GHG emissions in the future. The Fleet telemetrics (GPS) system, when fully implemented will provide more efficient driving routes, reduce trip distances, track and report idling time, and identify engine problems, resulting in overall improvement in vehicle operational efficiency and further reductions in fuel usage and emissions.
The Fleet Sustainability Program is one of the key initiatives included in the Mayor and Council’s Focus Area of Sustainability and Livability. The program recognizes that the Sacramento region has an air quality problem and that public agencies have a significant role to play in improving air quality by reducing the emissions from their fleet operations.
