Best Practices
The Environmental Health Accord Encompasses Toxics Reduction, Healthy Food Systems, and Clean Air.
Studies continue to document the environmental and health impacts of thousands of chemicals we encounter in our every day lives in our offices, homes, cars and food. Numerous guides have been developed to provide information to consumers on environmentally benign alternatives to everyday products by organizations like the Environmental Working Group and Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, among many others.
The impact of our food system and food choices on climate protection efforts is also gaining center stage and local governments are beginning to champion the importance of climate friendly foods. A 2006 United Nations report found that livestock accounts for 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and studies increasing show that eating local, organic food can significantly reduce emissions.
Local governments are beginning to adopt Environmentally Preferable Procurement Policies in an effort to ensure that procurement funds are spent on environmentally preferable products, and thereby support companies that are improving their environmental performance. Local governments are also launching initiatives that encourage residents and businesses to make climate friendly food choices.
